Free Swedish lessons — SFI
Your municipality (kommun)SFI (Svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish language teaching for adults. Every kommun (municipality) offers it, and you have a legal right to it if you live in Sweden and don't speak Swedish.
Steps

Register your address with Skatteverket — SFI is run by the kommun where you live.

Search '"SFI" + [name of your kommun]' to find your kommun's adult education (vuxenutbildning) page.

Apply online, by email, or in person at the kommun's vuxenutbildning office. Bring your ID and personnummer.

You'll be invited to a placement meeting where they check your reading and writing in any language and put you in the right level.

Choose between daytime, evening or distance (distans) classes if your kommun offers them.

Start the course. Attendance is important — missing too much can end your place.
Good to know
- SFI is completely free — the course and the books cost nothing.
- If you want to work in a specific trade, ask about 'yrkes-SFI' (SFI combined with vocational training).
- If you receive benefits from Försäkringskassan or Arbetsförmedlingen, tell them you're studying SFI — it can affect your support.
