Getting BankID
Your bankBankID is the digital ID you use to log in to almost every Swedish service — banks, 1177, Skatteverket, Försäkringskassan, schools, e-commerce. You get it from your Swedish bank, not from BankID itself.
Steps
- 1
Get a personnummer first, and open a Swedish bank account in your own name.
- 2
Tell your bank you want 'mobilt BankID'. They will start the activation and give you a one-time activation code.
- 3
Install the 'BankID' app on your smartphone from the App Store or Google Play.
- 4
Open the app and follow the activation steps using the code from the bank.
- 5
Set a 6-digit PIN that only you know. Keep it secret — never share it, not even with bank staff.
- 6
Test it by logging in to your bank or to 1177.se.
Good to know
- Never approve a BankID prompt that you didn't start yourself. Real banks and authorities will never call you and ask you to open BankID. This is the most common scam in Sweden.
- If you lose your phone, call your bank straight away to block your BankID.
- BankID only works on one phone at a time. If you change phone, re-activate it with your bank.
